2    Gerard (Gerrit) STREELMAN, born on 02-11-1863 in Hornhuizen, Groningen, Netherlands, died on 19-09-1919 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA at the age of 55, buried in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. Gerrit Streelman was a wholesale and retail dealer in fruits and vegetables, and on the morning of Sept. 19, 1919, he was going to the Grand Rapids Savings bank on Grandville Avenue to do some banking. A robbery was in progress when he went in, and the robbers shot him through the lip into his skull and through the shoulder into his chest as he tried to stop them. He died on the sidewalk as the robbers were getting away. Hundreds of people came to his funeral at Grandville Ave. Christian Reformed church and he was hailed as a "martyr in the cause of justice." Four men were arrested in Detroit for the robbery and murder in this event. Son of Johannes STREELMAN (see also 4) and Hendrikje MOLENHUIS (see also 5).
