She was a native of The Netherlands, where she was born in March 1855 and immigrated to the United States in 1873. About 1887 Jakob bought 80 acres of farmland in Spring Lake Township. Fifteen years later Jakob, Emma, and their children moved to a newly constructed home at 426 Seventh Street, in the same block that the Van Zylen Lumber Company and later the Meijer store would be located. Jakob managed rental properties in Muskegon and worked for the Van Zylen Lumber Company in Grand Haven. Emma, a year younger than her husband, died in 1923, and Jakob died on April 11, 1928. They were buried at Lake Forest Cemetery.Jakob and Emma had eight children including Martha, who was born in 1876. Next was Peter, who was born on March 2, 1880, and on November 4, 1903 married Henrietta Roossien. She was born December 4, 1883 and died on November 27, 1948. On September 5, 1951 Peter married Anna Musk, who lived from July 7, 1887 to October 2, 1979. Peter died on March 27, 1970. Jakob and Emma next child was Thomas, who was born on October 2, 1883, and married Anna Katt on April 4, 1905. Anna lived from March 18, 1884 to January 19, 1915. After her death, Thomas married Kathryn Vander Vere, from whom he was divorced.Thomas in February 1923 married Laura Bohlender, who was born on February 7, 1899. They resided in Muskegon. The Rycengas fourth child was John, who lived from March 1888 to 1951. In April 1912, John married Clara Verschore, who lived from January 26, 1894 to 1976. John and Clara moved to Detroit. Next was Lee, born on August 9, 1889, followed by Charles, born on May 13, 1893, and Edward, born on July 7, 1894. Finally there was Albert, who was five years old when he died of pneumonia in 1903.

To this union 12 children were born. In the year 1902 with her husband and children she left her homeland and came to America. They first made their home in the town of Meservey. Later the family moved on a farm, being engaged in farming. They retired from farm life in 1929 and moved to the town of Meservey, where the remaining years of life were spent in retirement. The departed was a faithful member of the Meservey Reformed Church since October,1919 when she was received into its fellowship on confession of faith in her Lord and Savior. During the last months of life the health of Mrs. Gerdes began to fail, chiefly due to ailment of the heart. Loving hearts and helping hands did not fail her in the days of her affliction and helplessness. Gradually becoming weaker she entered the hospital in Mason City about four weeks prior to her death. Every human means and medical skill was employed to prolong her life. But gradually her condition became more serious. On Wednesday morning, May 25, she quietly passed away, attaining the age of 81 years, 3 months, and 3 days. We believe she was ready to depart from this earthly life and meet her Lord. She leaves to mourn her departure, her children: Tim Gerdes of Goodell, Iowa; Miss Jennie Gerdes and Mrs. Gertie Wessels of Meservey, Iowa; Mrs. Reka Van Avery of Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Hulsing of Rockwell, Iowa; 4 brothers: John Wiemann of Thornton, Iowa; Leppo Wiemann of Alexander, Iowa; Thomas and Harm Wiemann of Verona, North Dakota; 2 sisters: Mrs. Jennie Wintjes of Meservey, Iowa; Mrs. Effie Neve of Sheffield, Iowa; 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and also many other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death of the immediate members of the family are the husband and seven children. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 28,1949 at Meservey Reformed Church with the pastor E. Associated with the Bunker PTA for many years and a representative of Bunker on the County PTA Borad, she was honored by the association in 1945 for her long service. Wiemann, 95, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (May 23, 2006) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Bena Annie Olsen was born Sept. 23, 1910, to Ole and Bena (Wessels) Olsen near Clear Lake. In her early childhood, she attended country school in the Meservey-Thornton area and worked for neighboring families. On March 26, 1929, she married John Wiemann. To this union, 10 children were born. John and Bena farmed in the Alexander area all their married life except for three years when they lived near Rockwell. John died on Aug. 7, 1960, with four dependent children still at home. Bena and her family moved to Belmond in 1962, where she cooked at the nursing home and Chapman?s Truck Stop, cleaned homes, baked rolls, did sewing and mending, quilted and babysat. She was a good and faithful member of Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Bena was a patient, caring person who always had room for visitors at her table. She was noted for serving pancakes, caramel rolls, meatloaf and fried potatoes among other family favorites. She led by example and was not a person to worry. Every new baby was regaled as a miracle. She was a common-sense person who didn?t try to impress people and felt ?if you couldn?t say anything good about a person, then don?t say anything at all.? Bena enjoyed trips whether on a bus tour, flying or driving for herself or others. She was a member of various card clubs and loved playing games. Bena was an avid fan of NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. She was an excellent joke teller. Many remarked that she was ?the living history book? for her family. Bena Wiemann is survived by her children, Orville (DeLores) of Wisconsin, Roger (Judy) of Belmond, Marjorie (Ronald) Steenblock of Belmond, David of Knoxville, Robert (Cheryl) of Webster City, Barbara (Roger) Flaten of Britt, Dennis (Pam) of Norwalk, Janet Kay (Merlin) Schlichting of Britt; a son-in-law, L. Kennard Miller, of Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Maria Wiemann, of Illinois; 38 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Harm Wiemann emigrated from Boone, Germany about 1897 with his parents, brothers and sisters. They first settled on a farm near Meservey, Iowa. After a few years, his heart yearned to return to Germany and on his return trip brought back with him his bride-to-be, Altja Nannenga and three of Altja's brothers also came.

Harm and Altja were married on Mar. 21, 1900. They became the parents of Janna (Mrs. John Hess), Jacob, Temmka (Mrs. William Remick), Stenius, Harm, Jr., Albert, Reka (Mrs. Richard Nuzzo), Marie (Mrs. Fred Sletvold) and Alvene (Mrs. Raymond Hurt).

They made their first home in Meservey, Iowa. Five of their children were born there; Janna, Jakob, Temnika, Stenius and Harm, Jr.

In 1910, Harm went to North Dakota with his brother, Tom. They rode the train as far as Port Emma in Dickey County. They ferried across the river and took horse and buggy to Ovid Township in LaMoure County where they purchased land located 1 mile west and 3 1/2 miles south of Verona.

Harm first built a small shanty and later building on a larger section so his wife and children, accompanied by her brother, Helmer, could come. They welcomed another son, Albert and two daughters, Reka and Marie. As they prospered, they rented more land and built a larger home. Here Alvene was born along with a twin who died at birth.

In the fall of 1932, they lost their home in a fire along with all their belongings. They then moved to a farm across the road. More tragedy hit the family that year when son, Stenius, died.

In 1940, they purchased a small farm with their son, Albert, north of Verona. At this time, Altja had back surgery that left her paralyzed in a wheelchair. Harm lost a leg in a haying accident. Altja died in 1952 and Harm died in 1962. Zoon van Temmo WIEMAN (zie V.15) en Janna Hinderks RICHERTS.

She was a member of Silver Creek Reformed Church. Mrs. Wieman is lovingly survived by her daughter, Christina Barthel of German Valley; grandsons, Thomas Barthel of Zurich, Switzerland, John (Penny) Barthel of Albany, Calif., Paul (Janet) Barthel of Waukesha, Wis., and Frederick (Tara) Barthel of Billings, Mont.; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Laible of Yuba City, Calif.; brother and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Louise Wieman of Texas and Cassie Ross of Egan; and nieces and nephews. Dena Wiemann, the daughter of John and Epka (Kaduce) Wiemann, was born on March 4, 1911, on the family farm at Meservey. She received her education in a rural school and Meservey High School. Dena was united in marriage to Henry Pals, Jr., on July 13, 1929, at the First Reformed Church of Meservey. Their union was blessed with four daughters: Evanette, Wanda, Betty, and Dianne. Henry and Dena farmed and raised their family in the Meservey, Belmond, and Sheffield areas until retiring to Belmond in 1967. In addition to farming with her husband, Dena was a life long homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, and nurturing grandmother. After moving to Belmond, she worked for many years as a cook at the Belmond High School. Dena was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey and later became a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. She was a member of the R.C.W. and served as president, treasurer, secretary of education among other capacities of the R.C.W. Over a period of 20 years, she taught Sunday School, Catechism, and Bible School. Throughout her entire life journey, her faith and spiritual journey were strong. Dena had numerous past times she enjoyed including reading, crafts, crocheting and morning coffee with friends. She had been a resident of the Rehabilitation Center since Jan. 25, 2009. Dena will be remembered by all who crossed her life journey as a very devout Christian, who loved her family and her many friends. She was a very gentle, caring and peaceful lady. Jennie Wiemann, was born on May 10, 1916 in Meservey, the daughter of John and Epka (Kaduce) Wiemann. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church, Meservey. She attended the Wisner No. 1 Country School until the 8th grade. She married Clarence Steenhard on February 25, 1937, at Zion Reformed Church. They lived in various towns and farms surrounding the Belmond area and stayed in Central Iowa for their married life. She worked for the Belmond School District as a cook for 28 years and retired only after gentle insistence from her family, who believed she deserved some time for herself. In 1998, she moved to the Belmond Care Center. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Steenhard) Hagie of Clarion; three sisters, Dena Pals, Frieda Jurgens and Thelma Langlitz; one son-in-law, Rich Kling; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; one daughter, Marilyn (Steenhard) Kling; two infant sons and one infant daughter; two brothers, Henry Wiemann and Leonard Wiemann; three brothers-in-law, Henry Pals, Lloyd Jurgens and Ivan Langlitz; and a sister-in-law, Lyda Wiemann. MESERVEY - Thelma Langlitz, 92, of Meservey went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 8, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment will be at the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Retz Funeral Home, 201 Ohio St., Meservey. Thelma was born the daughter of John and Epka (Kaduce) Wiemann on Sept. 13, 1918, on the family farm near Meservey. She attended country schools in the Meservey area. On March 20, 1940, Thelma was united in marriage with Ivan Langlitz in the parsonage of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. Ivan and Thelma were involved in farming in the Meservey and Klemme areas until 1968. Thelma was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, the R.C.W. and served as a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed Senior Citizen activities, her involvement with M.A.P.O. and working at the polls during elections. Thelma will be remembered for her strong faith and love of family. She was active in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending all their activities. She enjoyed canning, baking, crocheting, genealogy and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Lyda Arlene, daughter of Jake and Minnie (Meints) Koenen, was born March 16, 1924 near Meservey. She was educated through the 8th grade in country school. Lyda married Leonard Wiemann on June 3, 1943. Lyda worked hard on the farm, driving tractors, getting the ground ready for planting, and helping at harvest. She enjoyed keeping a spotless lawn and beautiful flowers. Lyda loved all kinds of music, from polkas to old time hymns. She had a special talent for playing the guitar, accordion, piano and organ by ear. She told stories of how much she enjoyed playing when she was younger. Lyda enjoyed game shows and watching basketball games on television. The past year Lyda had many trials, but by her sheer will to live and her determination, she became independent again. She proved just how tough she was and took great pride in her accomplishment. (Lyda told it like it was.) The bright spots in her life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lyda was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; granddaughter Heidi Wiemann; son-in-law Charles Rogalla; brothers Arthur and Leland Koenen; and sister Tena Pals. Lyda is survived by son Gordon (Judy) Wiemann of Clear Lake; daughter Carmen (Danny) Johnson of Belmond; grandchildren Marcy (Randee) Hyde, Becky (Rich) Formanek, Gary (Brooke) Wiemann, Charles (Christa) Rogalla, Chanda (Jim) Englin, and Donald (Amy) Johnson; great-grandchildren Jamie and Jessie Halfpop, Jacob Hyde, Brittany and Nicholas Formanek, Cody, Haley, Conner and Cooper Wiemann, and Dylan Englin; sister Grace Pals of Belmond; brother Jake (Mavis) Koenen of Meservey; and sisters-in-law Thelma Langlitz of Meservey, Dena Pals, Jennie Steenhard and Frieda Jurgens, all of Belmond.
