Generation III

4    Wouter SWETS, born on 25-12-1825 in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, died 1895 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, USA. He was born on Christmas Eve 1825 as Wouter Swets in Hardinxveld, in the southeastern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland, son of the 29 years aged contractor (aannemer) Teunis Swets and Aartje Oldemans.

On 9 April 1853 Wouter Swets married in the former municipality De Werken en Sleeuwijk, in the extreme northwestern part of the Dutch southern province Noord-Brabant, on the river Merwede, Dientje van Drunen, born in Sleeuwijk, daughter of Bastiaan van Drunen and Vijverke Snoek.

On 16 December 1853 their daughter Aartje was born in Hardinxveld.

On 26 May 1856 farmers Wouter (31 y) and Dientje (28) Swets and their daughter Aartje (3) arrived on the S.S. Epaminondas from Germany at the port of New York. On the same ship sailed Lue [Giel] Smets (farmer, 37), his wife Hendrika (34, farmer) and their children Barend (12), Teuna (10), Teunis (6) and Wouter (3). Giel Smets was very probably a -remote- relative of Wouter Smets.

In Illinois Wouter and Dientje Swets had eight more children: Maria (1857, South Holland -?), Bastian (ca. 1858), Alice (1859-1943), Teunis [Dennis] (17 April 1861, South Holland-1942, Orange City, Iowa), Vijverke [Sophia] (1863-1929), Antonia or Lena (1865-?) Wouter [Walter] (1866 South Holland-1941 Thornton [Township]), and Jan J [John] (1868-1944 South Holland).

In 1880 Walter Swets (54 y, farmer), his wife Dinke (52), their children Bastian (21, born in Illinois, laborer), Alice (20, Illinois), Tunis (19, Illinois, laborer), Sophia (17, Illinois), Lena (15, Illinois), Walter (13, Illinois), and John (12, Illinois) lived in Thornton [Township], Cook County, Illinois.

In June 1895 his wife Dina Swets died at the age of 71 years in the Dutch truck farmers settlement of South Holland, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois, located just south of Chicago, Wouter Swets died there too in the same year at the age of about 69 years.

In January 2016 FAG contributor Glen DeYoung went to the Homewood Gardens Cemetery to see if Wouter Swets and his wife still had visible headstones. He looked at all of the stones in the Swets family plot where they are buried, and he could not tell which one of the old unreadable stones were theirs. But in June 2016 he had finally a chance to dig around in the Swets family grave plot at the Homewood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, and was able to find the headstones of Wouter and Dientje Swets. They were in the Swets plot, but they were buried. The stone of Dientje was readable with a little work, but the headstone of Wouter (which is next to Dientje on the left side) is completely worn smooth. Both headstones are the same matching style of stone. Son of Teunis Wouterszn SWETS (see also 8) and Aartje OLDEMANS (see also 9).
