On Saturday 13 April 1867 the 25 years old farm hand Albert Kleinhuizen, son of the day laborers Klaas Alberts Kleinhuizen and Grietje Hendriks Smit, married in the village of Ulrum in the extreme northwestern part of the province Groningen to the one year older servant maid Martje Wiersum, born in Ulrum, daughter of the late Eije Freerks Wiersum and day laborer Aaltje Klasens Zuidema.

In 1867 Mr. Kleinhuizen emigrated to America, landing in New York on July 1, 1867. He took up residence in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

She was born in December 1840 as Martje Wiersum in the country village of Ulrum in the utter northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of the 36 years aged day laborer Eije Freerks Wiersum and Aaltje Klasens Zuidema.

On Monday 6 December 1841 farm hand Klaas Alberts Kleinhuizen, son of day laborer Albert Hendriks Kleinhuizen and Trijntje Jans Oosting, married in Ulrum to the also 26 years aged servant maid Grietje Hendriks Smit, born in the nearby fishing-village of Zoutkamp, daughter of ship servant Hendrik Wiepkes Smit and Trijntje Jacobs Schreuder.

In 1868 the 53 years aged K[laas] Kleinhuizen, without occupation, emigrated with his two years younger wife G[rietje] and their sons J[an] (16 y) and Reeuwke (10 y) from Vierhuizen via Harlingen and Liverpool to North America, all organized by Prins & Zwanenburg, expediteurs (shipping agents).

Klaas A. Kleinhuizen died in September 1877 at the age of 62 years in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His wife Grietje died there too in March 1897 at the age of 81 years.

In 1947 not any person living in the Netherlands (Nederland) had the surname Kleinhuizen anymore, so it "died out" in their home country, but -quite peculiar- "survived" in the USA. The most recent record of a Kleinhuizen that was found in Nederland was on 11 December 1879, when Trijntje Kleinhuizen was born in Vierhuizen, daughter of the 26 years aged day laborer Albert Kleinhuizen and Albertje Warners. Albert, his wife and their three children emigrated in 1882 from Ulrum to the USA. They were the last Kleinhuizens in the Netherlands. Son of Albert Hendriks KLEINHUIZEN (see also 4) and Trijnje Jans OOSTING (see also 5).

3    Grietje Hendriks SMIT, born on 09-06-1815 in Zoutkamp, Groningen, Netherlands, died on 29-03-1897 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA at the age of 81, buried in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. She was born in June 1815 as Grietje Smid (= Smith) in the fishing-village Zoutkamp in the former -until 1990- municipality Ulrum in the nothwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of the 28 years aged seaman Hendrik Wiepkes Smid and Trijntje Jacobs Schreeuwer. Her father signed the birth cerificate (geboorteakte) in a neat handwriting with "H.W. Smit".
Her mother Trientje Schreuder, widow of Hendrik Smit, died on 3 June 1874 in her birth place Zoutkamp at the age of 87 years.

On Monday 6 December 1841 servant maid Grietje Hendriks Smit, daughter of ship servant Hendrik Wiepkes Smit and Trijntje Jacobs Schreuder married in Ulrum to the also 26 years aged farm hand Klaas Alberts Kleinhuizen, son of day laborer Albert Hendriks Kleinhuizen and Trijntje Jans Oosting and born in the small country village of Vierhuizen (= Four houses), municipality Ulrum, in the utter northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.

Her husband Klaas Alberts Kleinhuizen was in all those years a day laborer.

In 1868 the 51 years aged G[rietje] emigrated with her husband, the 53 years aged K. Kleinhuizen (a less well-to-do Seceded Christian) and two sons from Vierhuizen to North America.

Her husband Klaas A. Kleinhuizen died in September 1877 at the age of 62 years in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Widow Grietje died there too in March 1897 at the age of 81 years. Daughter of Hendrik Wiepkes SMIT (see also 6) and Trijntje Jacobs SCHREUDER (see also 7).
